In 1983, 23- year-old Tami Oldham and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, were experienced sailors tasked with delivering a yacht from Tahiti to San Diego. However, tragedy struck when they encountered Hurricane Raymond, a Category 4 storm. Despite their best efforts, the yacht was battered by 40- foot waves and violent winds.
Richard tethered himself to the boat and sent Tami below deck for safety. Moments later, the boat capsized, and Tami was knocked unconscious. When she awoke 27 hours later, she discovered the yacht was severely damaged, Richard was gone, and she was stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean…..
For the next 41 days, Tami battled dehydration, starvation, and despair. With only basic supplies and her sheer determination, she improvised a sail from a broken mast and used a sextant and a nautical map to navigate. Finally, she managed to reach the Hawaiian Islands, more than 1,500 miles from where the storm had struck……
Tami’s story of survival is one of resilience, resourcefulness, and sheer willpower. Her experience was later chronicled in her memoir Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea and adapted into the 2018 film Adrift………
